The Learning Gallery: Nubble Lighthouse

From the artist:

Johannes,

Attached is an 11" x 14" watercolor on arches 140 hot press. It was rendered from a photo of Nubble Lighthouse in southern Maine. I am obviously an amateur and have been painting for about two years in my spare time. I think I failed to make the sky blue enough and my shadows are too washed therefore don't depict this as the bright sun shinning through the clouds. Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Leo

Your Original
Strong Points:

Not bad for an amateur. You were able to convey the kind of mood felt in these places.

You don't need to have blue skies in a painting. As matter of fact many paintings even look better when you change the scene form the way nature portraits itself almost everyday.

My Modifications
Areas to Work On:

The most outstanding suggestion I would make is that you have too strong a value contrast (dark against lights or vice versa) where the water hits the shoreline. Therefore distracting the viewer from the most interesting area (the lighthouse). Try to keep this strong play of lights within the focal point.

Cloud shadows are darker near the Zenith and gradually become lighter near the horizon.

Additional comments:

Good job - keep it up!
