From the artist:

Hi, I was wondering if you could please critique the attached scratchboard. It's a picture of my Dad and it's my first scratchboard ever! I thought I'd try out this medium, as I saw the Artschool Online lessons on scratchboard and wondered what it was. I love it! Its very different from anything else! Anyway, a critique would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much!

Strong Points:
  • Not centered in the picture plane.
  • You have captured not only a picture but a mood.
  • The character of this face is apparent at once.
  • The play of lights and darks is perfectly attended.

Suggestions:

  • I haven't any! This is truly a nice piece. More please!
Additional comments:

I absolutely adore this piece! Your first scratchboard, you say? My goodness, what can we expect from you in the future? I find the piece just a bit representational, and that simply adds all the more to it's charm! You have managed to capture the mood of this subject wonderfully and he looks at once, like someone I would love to spend some time around! I love this work. Please send us more in the future!
