From the artist

Please critique my sad little girl. Size of canvas is 24x30"; medium is oil. I took the little girl from a photograph in an advertisement and added the chair and the cat from other advertisements.

The Learning Gallery: The Sad Face

Strong Points:

This is the first painting that I've received in which I don't see anything wrong with it. In fact it has many good composition points.

The way you placed the objects was very well thought out. You are allowing the viewer to travel in your painting. My eyes follow the yarn. I stop to take a look at the doll then I go to the cat. What was a homerun is the fact that the cat's paw is pointing to the girl which is the main subject of your painting. Even the way her arms are placed leads your eye to her face. Another plus is that the door is just suggested. Your drawing strokes are also correct. Their movement is from left to right in an oblique mode aiming towards the girl. It is very dangerous to take different elements form diverse subject material and just put them in a painting; however you placed them all in their correct places.

Congratulations!

Johannes
