| Areas to work on:
All the objects are bathed in intense light. This forces your eye to wander about and not really focus on one given area. It is important to establish a more predominant area where the most beauty intensifies. Please read other Art Critique Center in the Learning Gallery where I have made several observations about the center of interest. Also do some research from the great masters who did a lot of still life paintings and you will see how they define one section casting a shadow on the overall painting except for one area which will be in intense light. Rembrant and Rubens were masters of this. When you buy tubes of paint, the manufacturers make them at the strongest hue possible (referred to as chroma). They are not readily made to paint with directly from the tube unless you intend to paint flowers, fabrics, pop art or other man made objects. The artist is to neutralize the chroma by adding an opposite color from the color wheel, referred to as the complementary color. The beauty of color is in the correct use of grays. In other words subdued colors mixed with complementary colors. Watch out for repetitive forms. In your original work you had two pears standing upright both in the same position and the same size. It will also help to round out fruit that have a shinny surface by incorporating reflected light on the shadow side. Also look for ways to have reflected color. This will happen when the light hits the green apple thus reflecting a green glow onto the shadow side of the eggs. This can be very easily seen on white objects. My modifications: Now there is no doubt where the center of interest is. Casting shadow on various parts of a still life helps convey roundness and a three-dimensional look. I rotated one of the pears to avoid the repetitive forms. If you look closely at the two apples in the front, there are hints of reflected light. I also desaturated the color. There is reflected light picked up by the shadows on the white eggs. Finally, I added a touch of brown in the green background to provide some relief to the otherwise constant green area. Additional comments: Excellent job! |
