"Making Your Own Proportional Caliper"

A Proportional Caliper, such as the image to the right, is a precise tool used in enlarging or reducing 3 dimensional measurements. The instrument consists of a small caliper diametrically opposed to a large caliper and held together with an adjustable wing nut. Enlargements up to 5 times and reductions up to 1/5 size are possible as well as inverted measurements can be made with most professional calipers, but they can be quite expensive.
A low cost alternative to purchasing this relatively high priced tool with 3 ratio choices of 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 can be handmade and will work quite effectively. This handmade caliper can be used for taking a few key measurements on a live model and transferring them to your smaller scale sculpture or conversely point up a Maquette to a larger size sculpture. An example of usage would be; if you have a 6' model you want to sculpt 18" high, set the adjusting screw to the 1:4 setting and everything you measure on the model with one end will transfer to the sculpture in scale on the other.

Parts needed:

  • 2 Wood Yardsticks (same as 2, 3' wooden rulers)
  • a ¼” x 20 x ¾” machine screw
  • a corresponding wing nut for the screw

Tools needed:

  • knife or saw
  •  C-clamp
  •  tape measure
  •  drill and drill bit for the screw size you’re using
Accuracy is important, as this is a measuring tool.
On the next page, follow each step and soon you will have a inexpensive caliper you will enjoy for many projects to come.
