This is taking a line drawing a step further and adding depth and texture by adding lines, and crossing them over one another to make darker areas. The best I can do is give you some examples so here they are. The elf to the side has simple one line thatch at the bottom with her hair, and double thatch at the top with the moon. It does not appear much darker with the double thatch because the lines below are so close together. To create lighter shades the lines should be spaced farther apart. Ink is a very unforgiving medium, therefore it pays to plan ahead. I suggest using light pencil marks to lay a guide down, or to do a complete sketch on a scratch paper for use. However planning can not always stop accidents from happening. Depending on how large an error you have made it may be able to fix it, cover it up, or necessary to scrap the picture all together. If it is only a small error it can be possible to adjust the lines making them thicker or to add another fold. Sometimes adding shading to that area can help. If it is in a place that can not be covered over like that you might (if the paper is thick enough, and the ink did not bleed through the paper too far) be able to pick up the ink with a small piece of tape, or if you must scratch it off with an exacto knife. I have only seen this done once, and it does not always work, but it can be possible. If the mistake is on an edge it may be possible to add a border, or crop the picture to get rid of the offending mistake. I do not suggest white out, though they do have some “typewriter” white outs that are in sheet form and can be burnished onto the picture. I am not sure if this is permanent, or if it will ruin the paper later so if you do want to try this I suggest you seek advice on it. I have thought of white gel pens as cover up but someone told me that would disappoint me. And lastly, if it is completely unfixable, you may have to just start over. Do not despair. Every mistake is something to learn from. Closing I hope you do try inks some time. With the diverse kinds of inks, pens and papers you can create some truly interesting and beautiful works of art. Though ink is a demanding medium, it is also a strong and vibrant one. |
