Finally, just head over to File > Save As... and save your new avatar. Ideally, you should save the image as a .gif (smaller file size compared to other popular web graphics formats like .jpg or .png), even though .jpg still works for the chat avatar uploader. For our ultra-light task today, you can just ignore the JPEG/GIF save options window to the right.
Forum avatar size
(60x60 pixels or less)
Chat avatar size
(Exactly 35x35 pixels)
Notes:

> If you want an avatar of another size that's not necessarily a square, think of your final image as a few times smaller than what you've selected, and left-click outside the selection box and re-select until you're happy with it.

> You can also use Irfanview to convert among image formats. For example, if you already have a bitmap image (.bmp) that's the right size for use, just open it and save it again as a GIF file. There is also a built-in batch converter (shortcut: B) to change multiple avatar-sized images into a particular format (sometimes useful for making animated .gifs.)
