| * Note: Ideally avatars should be saved as .gif files, but due to patent issues, many versions of GIMP have disabled file saving in the GIF format. However, a plugin is available on winGIMP for users in nations where the LZW patent does not apply. (Scroll down to the very bottom of the page to download the .zip file.) An alternative would be to convert the JPG into a GIF using a file conversion utility.

| Creating an avatar using Irfanview: |
| Open Irfanview, and in the top left, click on File > Open.
A window will come up, and you'll find your favourite picture easily with the thumbnail previews. Click Open. |
| If your picture is too large to fit the screen, click on the magnifying glass with the minus sign until the preview is at a size that you're comfortable working with.
Since WC!'s maximum avatar size is 60x60 pixels, we'll make our avatar just that. By default, left-clicking and holding it down while dragging your mouse diagonally will produce a rectangular selection area. So, starting at the top left corner, left-click and drag towards the opposite corner to frame the area you want in your avatar. While you're still holding down the left button of your mouse, check the header at the top to see if your selection is a square. How would you tell? Easy. See where it says XY:(number, number) (number x number pixels) at the very top of the program window? The first set of numbers cites your mouse's position; the second set is what you're looking for. In the following screenshot, the area that we've selected is exactly 1453x1453 pixels. That's several times larger than what we need, so we'll resize it later on. |
