| I then turned this metaphor on its head, comparing it to the ill-chanced taking of a young teen's life through irresponsibility and stupidity. A moment's selfish and thoughtless fun ending in a tragedy that affects parents, friends, and community. By engaging thru "performance art" if you will, all the students were able to experience at the same time standing on both sides of the fence. On the one hand, they allowed themselves to go along with the ride and enjoy the fun. Then, they were able to see that such fun came at a price and that something precious was destroyed. It would be hoped the experience of this assembly would call upon better judgment come prom night. My admonitions at the end of the presentation were to enjoy their prom night, to congratulate them on finishing up their high school careers, but ask them to please please please keep it safe. Stay smart. Do the right thing for the sake of all those involved that love them. When we were through...all in one hour's time, I received a standing ovation. I had student's come up to offer hugs and appreciation. Some said they had never experienced a presentation that had affected them as did this one. Many expressed disbelief and wonder how I could possibly allow this painting to be destroyed! I knew the idea of value had successfully transferred; they had truly got it! I assured them that their own future safe keeping, maybe saving just one teen's life had a far greater value...and that in order for the example to really work effectively, this work's value had to be understood. They had to see and experience a loss of this value. A thing valued taken away, and done so at their good pleasure! The staff as well came up and thanked me as students filed out to return to their classrooms. I still every so often run into someone that remembers that program and the effect it had on them. As it would turn out, the school even arranged for the painting on its large easel to be set up in a hallway during prom night, where everyone could see it. Making the work truly an interactive art form, and allowing it to be a reminder for their safe keeping throughout the night. You know...I've won some major awards in my painting and artistic career, but I can't say anything felt as gratifying as the moment these young people stood up and cheered at the end of the program. Artists are often spoken of with disdain in the public sector. We are often looked at as wierdo's, irresponsible, purveyors of degradation, whatever. It goes to show though, and often to my own surprise, that we can have an impact beyond our easels and oft sheltered private lives if we'll put our creativity and heart to do so. Peace... |
