| Let's face it - being a pastellist is not a cheap hobby. Working on artist quality materials can take it's toll on your bank account fairly quickly. So why not make your own? It is hard to argue with the savings you can expect.
This article is to show you how to create your own toothy pastel boards. By using this simple recipe, you will learn the steps to create your own perfect pastel surface. The surface created is similar to that on Ampersand Pastelbord. It works well with both soft and oil pastel and is able to take many layers of pastel. |

Where to Buy Marble Dust: For this leeson, I used Fredrix Marble Powder. I purchased it at an art store locally, but the same can be ordered online through http://www.dickblick.com |
![]() | In the bowl or bucket, mix approximately a cup of gesso with 2-3 heaping tablespoons of the marble dust. The more dust you add, the more tooth your surface will have.
Add enough water to bring the mixture to about the consistency of house paint. Whisk until smooth. |

![]() | Lay the illustration board on the drop cloth and start to spread the mixture onto the surface using the sponge brush. You will want to make the coating as smooth as possible. As you brush, you will discover the application technique that will work best for you. |
