| Drawing fur in Pen and Ink is quite easy....very time consuming but enjoyable and worthwhile if you are a detail freak like me.
I am no expert on this subject; but hopefully, I can pass on the few tips I have learned to someone just starting with this media. All you need to get started is a reference picture, a pen and some paper.....I use mainly a Rotring Graphic 0.1 and Fabriano Artistico HP Watercolour Paper. I find the smoother surface of the hot pressed paper very nice to use and of course it is archival. |
| The pen stroke you use is very simply a line. I call it a flick. Short flicks for short fur....longer flicks for longer fur. More flicks for dense or darker fur and less for lighter areas. Vary the length and direction of the stroke a little. Refer to my example on the right to get an idea of what I mean.

| Let's get started!
I have chosen two reference photos from our wonderful WetCanvas! Library....Mustcreate's Squirrel and TeAnne's Vinni-Van. I chose these two images because the fur shows up really well and it is important to be able to see which direction the fur is growing. Many thanks to Em and Te for the use of these lovely photos. |
| First, we will try the Squirrel.
I am using my usual HP paper and 0.1 pen. The size is 8"x 11" | ![]() |

Draw your image, or trace it onto your paper. No need to be absolutely accurate as you will be penning over the outlines later. Shade some of the darker areas with pencil, just to give some form and guide lines. I usually draw the eye and nose in pencil too. |
