"Pastel Demo from a Plein Air Oil Sketch"

Author: Marc_R._Hanson, Contributing Editor

This next image was to be the final...final! Now I notice that the edge of the 'lit' snow that is in the middle ground is way too hard. So I'm going to do a little refinement and then add another final,final-final image, and hopefully that will be FINAL!

From start to finish this took about 3.5 hours plus or minus. That includes the photographing, answering the phone and letting the dog out...and in...and.... If this had been painted outside, it would have, and usually does, go much faster because I generally leave the dog at home and I hate cell phones.

The two images below show details of the work at this point in the process.
Below is the final finished piece, after more revisions, on the left, and a detail of it on the right. In the detail you can see where I have softened the edges in the area around the center of interest, the snow that is being lit by the sun. A few other tweaks in the area of the trees and the scrubby brush, and I'm done.

My purpose in doing this demo was to show one way that I go about working with the pastels. My hope is that you'll find something in it that will be usefull in your own work.

The plein air oil sketch is 9"x12" and the pastel is 11"x15".

Thanks for taking the time to view it.

Marc R. Hanson is a painter living in Minnesota. His work is mostly landscape painted in both the oil and pastel medium. "I've been pursuing a life as a painter since finishing up studies in illustration at Art Center College of Design -Pasadena, CA in 1976. The natural world has always been my inspiration whether it was painting birds or the landscape. Along the way I have been fortunate to paint with and study under some of the country's great painters. I am always learning and have recently been able to teach classes and workshops in order to pass some of what I've learned on to others." Marc's work is shown in galleries around the country including Taos, NM, Santa Barbara, CA, and Kansas City, MO, among others. He's a signature member of The Oil Painters of America, and member of The National Academy of Professional Plein Air Painters. His paintings have garnered him numerous awards including an Award of Excellence from an OPA National Exhibit, and a 2nd and 5th place Landscape award, and several Honorable Mention Awards in the Pastel Journal's-Pastel 100. Marc teaches through The Minnesota River School of Fine Art in Burnsville, MN and Cornucopia Art Center in Lanesboro, MN.
