Step 4

This is where you will see the drawing starting to take shape. I now switch to just a .005 pen. Since I am drawing wood I need to keep in mind line direction and how close the lines are in order to achieve different values. Wavy lines like you see near the top and bottom areas really give the effect of wood. I don't have a set pattern when I am doing this. I just fly by the seat of my pants *grin*. Just keep things consistent and you will have no problems. Remember, the closer the lines the darker the value and the farther apart the lighter the value.
Step 5

In this final step I fill in the middle white area using my .005 pen. I also take this time to make any adjustments to the drawing. I just look it over and decide if I need to add anything anywhere or if I need to punch up the values in some areas. I purposely left that white area near the bottom right because it reminded me of a patch of snow sitting on the old wood. So, I left it. That is the great thing about your art work. Since it is your piece of art, you can take it as far as you like.

Well that's the end of this article for me. It has been a learning experience for me and I hope for some of you too. Do remember to share what you have done in the Pen & Ink Forum with this exercise as well as other adventures you make with pen and ink.
