Deadwood Drawing Demonstration/Lesson

Step 1:

Here you will see the steps I take when starting a Pen & Ink drawing. I call this one "Deadwood". The tools I used are Micron pens, sizes .005, .05, and a brush pen and is drawn on acid free 110lb smooth paper.

I start the drawing with a pencil sketch (used ink here so the scan would show up better) and render just a line drawing to get my basic shapes and patterns down. Once this is done you can ink over your line drawing using a .005 pen as you see here. Now I am ready for the next step in the drawing.

PS: Make sure you are happy with your line drawing in pencil before you outline it in ink. Once you ink, there is no turning back *smile*.

Print out a copy of this and try your hand at rendering this drawing. Then post it in the Pen & Ink forum so we can see how you've done.
Step 2

The next step is to fill in the "darkest" areas of the drawing. I like to work from dark to light so I can see value comparisons as I render the drawing. I used a brush pen and also the .05 pen for filling in all of my darkest areas. Once I finish filling in my darks I am ready for my next step.
Step 3

Now we are ready for some line work. Here I use the .05 pen to start shading in some values just lighter than the darkest areas. I am always thinking of my line direction when I start to shade. It is important even at this stage. I use downward stokes at the top and then change to angled strokes for the shading in the area near the bottom. From this step you can see how the dark shading is mixing with the completely dark areas I did before. On to the next step.
