"Commissioned Artwork - from Concept to Completion"

The impact of the piece is beginning to take shape with the addition of the red layer. There is still much to do in blending and color but the red gives a hint of the overall power of the final painting.
Although somewhat hard to see, a number 24 palette knife was used to texture the titanium white adding direction and a sense of flow around the rainbow image. I used texture in the white areas to create shadows and enhance movement in the work.
After blending each band of color I allowed it to dry for a day before applying a coat of gloss varnish over the entire piece. The piece was complete. I went to the framer with the client and helped in choosing the best frame to complement the client's home decor and the painting. This is optional of course, however, I think it is good customer service to offer to do so. Black matte 1/2" with 1/8" to 1/4" shadow between the canvas and the frame was the client's choice of completing the project.
Working large was very good experience, and it gave me the opportunity to "stretch" my limits. I proved to myself that I could do it! The project took 24 1/2 hours to complete, not including the time spent with concept watercolor and computer work. I figure I spent about 2 to 3 hours designing the concepts to show the client. The satisfaction of completing the work was gratifying and well worth the angst of "stretching" myself to a previously perceived limit. Often what is uncomfortable increases our strength and flexibilty. I highly recommend working large. It is a "liberating" method of breaking crystalized patterns in our work. It does not seem possible to me to approach a painting with the same preconceptions I might have entertained prior to "working large".

If you have enjoyed viewing this process, please let me know. You have a direct influence on whether or not I continue to put the effort into publishing! If it is valuable to you, it is worth my time.
Traveling and exploring the world have been a part of my life from the age of 14. My passion for new sights and perceptions has influenced my art career. I have visited such far away places as Japan, India, Spain, France, Italy, Trinidad, and Tobago in search of inspiration. The art of living is a constant challenge. It is my hope that the impact and impressions of what I have seen, felt, and experienced bring you as much joy as it does to me.
