"Underpainting - A primer for the new painter"

Author: Michael_Georges, Contributing Editor

Summary

I have used this underpainting method in over a dozen paintings. The rigorous structure of completing a line drawing, a complete value rendering in charcoal, a very detailed underpainting en'verdaccio, and then finally taking the work to color has really helped me improve my art. I hope it will help you too.

It may seem like a lot of work, but remember, at each stage you are eliminating a series of decisions you would normally be trying to make in color. As a beginner, it will be easier for you if you don't have to simultaneously juggle line, form, value, and color - this method compartmentalizes each and allows you to focus and learn at each stage.

We all learn from someone. I have been blessed with several really wonderful teachers along my path and it is only fitting that they receive credit here. The verdaccio method I detailed in this article was taught to me by Frank Covino who offers classes around the nation. Frank is an amazing teacher and I have only the highest praise his classes - run, don't walk and get yourself enrolled. You will learn so much more than method. He literally took a decade off my journey. Frank's website is: http://www.portrait-art.com. The site is not impressive, but Frank is.

And finally, I have recently begun to explore other methods of painting as I hope you will do too. I spent some time with William Whitaker and learned a method of painting that is more direct. However, it would have all been quite Greek to me had I not spent the time on those dozen paintings learning value and color via a verdaccio underpainting. Bill paints directly and his work is simply spactacular - you have to see it - his website is: http://www.williamwhitaker.com.
