"Border Collie In Mixed Media"

Here, I have started on her muzzle. On the shadowed side, I added in blue hues to give the impression of cooler shadowed areas. I put in the base colour first with acrylic using the darkest tones for this then I used graphite and more acrylic in a lighter tone to add in the lighter hairs and the darker shadows between hairs.
Here, I have started to paint in the dark areas around her white muzzle. I use black watercolour pencil and normal black coloured pencil for this and build up layers. I have put in the pink skin on the top of her muzzle and have started painting in the bottom of her blaze (White stripe). As the blaze is not solid but made up of lots of white hairs on a black base, I paint in the black under it before painting in the white hairs over the top unlike the rest of the muzzle. I also did this on the side where she is turning grey, painting in white hairs in varying density depending on how grey she is in that area.
I also used black ink to add in detail in the darker areas.
Next, I have decided to do a tutorial on how I do the hair in the fur. I chose the area around our Mist's left eye for this.
Step 1.
Here, I have just drawn in strokes with watercolour pencil. I make sure the strokes run in the direction of the lay of the hair. It is always important to work in the direction of the lay of the hair in all stages of painting it.
Step 2.
Here, I have wet the watercolour pencil strokes with a brush full of water.
