Holding the charcoal on its side, mass in the shape of the head LIGHTLY. Do not draw an outline, simply fill in the area. Measure the width of the head as compared to the length. Use your finger or eraser to take away, use side of charcoal to add to the shape. It should look like the shadow of the person. It's surprising how much identifying information is present at this stage.
Still using the side of the charcoal, mass in the eye sockets, the bottom of the nose, the upper lip, the shadow below the lower lip, and the shadow under the chin. Do this lightly. It should really begin to resemble the subject.
Find the darkest darks of (5) value, and mass them in using the side of the charcoal. Do this gently. You can come back later and really darken them at the finishing stage.
Mass in the shadows on the face, neck and shoulders. (4) value.
Lift out light areas on the lighted side of the figure.
