Make marks with the side, end and sharp point of the charcoal. Play with it to see what variety of marks you can make.
While you're playing, see what kinds of marks your fingers will make. It's almost like fingerpainting.
Try using smaller pieces of charcoal held sideways. This is good for filling in smaller areas.
Make a value scale, with (1) being the white of the paper, and (5) being the darkest value you can make with the charcoal you're using. It's important to know how to lighten and darken areas. Use fingers, chamois, blending stump, eraser.
Mark the angle of the head, top of head, bottom of chin, shoulders, and angle of breastbone.
