"Drawing Portraits with Charcoal"

Author: Ruth_Cox, Contributing Editor

Use the chamois, or your fingers, or a soft cloth, to smooth and blend the tone. Use a light touch. Don't grind the charcoal into the paper, but lightly move it around on the surface. You should get a fairly even, silvery, medium value tone.
Hold the charcoal lightly near the end, and use the side of the charcoal for filling in areas.
Use the side of the charcoal to make more areas of value on top of the tone.
Use your fingers to lift off some of the tone to make a lighter value.
Pull the eraser to a point and use it as a drawing tool to lift out light areas and lines.
