| Our third and last piece will be built a little differently. We're going to use the star tool. It's hiding behind the Ellipse tool. Click and hold down on the Ellipse icon in your tool palette. After a moment the other tool choices will pop up. Select the star tool. Click anywhere on your canvas and the star dialogue box will pop up. Enter 2" for radius 1, .75" for radius 2, and 4 for the number of points. Leave the star selected and go to Object > Path Offset Path. Leave the offset amount at -. 125". Select all (Command A) and apply the Pathfinder Minus Front filter. | ![]() |
| Bring back the hidden pieces. Object > Show All or (Command+Option 3) Select them all and line them up with each other. Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center (it seems repetitive but it becomes second nature to zip through these steps after awhile). Let's make each piece a different color. I made mine red, yellow, and orange. Go to the Pathfinder window and use the Divide command (ungroup the new object, darken it, and delete the gray pieces again). | ![]() |
| It's finally time to start weaving. Get your paint bucket (K) and fill in the pieces so they look like they're running over and under each other. It looks more complicated than the squares we did last time, but the principle is exactly the same. It helps to keep in mind that you always work with little groups of three adjacent pieces. Also, notice how the sides are symmetrical to each other, so you can see the same shapes repeating themselves around the pattern. | ![]() |
| Once you're done coloring the shapes, start selecting those groups of three and using the Unite command on them. Take your time, work your way around the pattern, and you'll end up with this! You've got a lot more techniques to play with now, so go wild! If you'd like a refresher on the first article, CLICK HERE! | ![]() |
