"Egg Tempera Using PASTELS!"

Advantages of using pastels with the egg medium instead of dried pigments: Egg tempera beginners can just scrape pigment off there pastels instead of resorting to yolk + watercolor or buying harder-to-find dried pigments. One can easily have an incredible selection of pigments available -- this doesn't use much pastel stick up either. I have five jars of powdered pigments, but I have 300+ pastels to choose from. One can, and should, still mix once using the egg/pastel paste, but it's nice having the selection.

Disadvantages: This technique is unproven -- although unlikely, it's possible that the egg might not enjoy the company of the pastel binder. Also, it takes longer to scrape pastels to get the powdered pigment than it does to use traditional powdered pigments. However, if you don't have the powdered pigments available, that isn't an issue.
This is an egg tempera made using soft pastel 'dust.' I spent all of fifteen minutes making this (gotta love the drying time.. it makes for quick layering) -- it's just to show that it can be done. Also, in case anyone is wondering, this dried like paint and isn't 'dusty' or in need of any fixative.. it's paint. This is a copy 'after' Alfredo Gomez's "Slice of Life" (available at Quent Cordair Fine Art). I'd like to think that the rich color of the pastel pigment made for a particuarly vivid end-product.

Study 'after Gomez' using pastels in egg tempera medium - 5x7 on paper. (very heavy acid-free papers work fine)

If you haven't tried egg tempera before, this is a great way to get started, and if you're a veteran dust-kicker (pastelist), then you owe it to your sticks to, at least once, treat them like the powdered pigment they are and give this a shot.
