The gather (marble core) is coated with frit repeatedly until there is fairly thick coat of opaque glass. I don’t want the core glass to be exposed during the various stages of forming the marble. So the opaque frit is used as a cover. You could use a rod instead of frit to add the opaque layer. My supplies just happen to be low in this color rod, and rolling the gather in the frit actually helps maintain the round shape. The enamel will totally cover this base coat of frit eventually. I like aqua-blue, and that’s why I’m using it for both enamels and frit. René and devotees tend to use whites (neutrals) as the base for the metals. Maybe I will too after more experimentation. The silver specks are metal leaf sitting on a graphite marvering plate. We’ll use these later. First Punty Change |
| There is enough frit added to the left side (some not fully melted in). You can see that I’m still using that short rod on the right. The new punty rod is being added to the left, and I will continue to add frit to the right side once I punty off.
Punty Off and Shape To Round |
|
The rod on the right has been removed by heating it just above the marble surface, which leaves a little piece behind, and this is removed with tweezers. The right side is then covered with frit, and then the mold is used for the first time to shape the marble. Enameling The Marble |
| I shift enamel onto the marble right over the little wedding favor aluminum container so that most of the powder goes right back into the container. The enamels are put on randomly. Feel free to experiment and find out which enamel causes what color effect given leaf metal contact, torch temp, or torch atmosphere etc.
