I’ve been painting for over 22 years and work exclusively in pastels. As a pastel
painting instructor and a writer for The Pastel Journal I’m always looking for
information and ideas about different styles and techniques, which is how I found
Wet Canvas. Although I’ve only been participating in the Pastel Forum for a short
time everyone has made me feel very much at home. I particularly enjoy having people
who will honestly but respectfully critique work—especially when I need a knowledgeable
audience. I find the time I spend here to be informative and a lot of fun.

I particularly enjoy pastels as a medium for their intense, luminous colours and the
variety of application techniques which allow me to capture a very individual view of
any theme. This is a flexible and forgiving medium, one in which I can break the
so-called ‘rules’ and express my personal vision. It is also a medium which is easy to
use with no brushes to wash and little clean-up - except for dust on the easel and hands!

I began using pastels a little more than two years ago and for most of that time have
participated in the Pastel Forum of WC. I’ve found the support, advice and enthusiasm
of the people in the forum quite exceptional. Having other eyes view my works and offer
constructive critique has been invaluable. It’s endlessly surprising to me what people
can see that I have totally missed by being too ‘close’ to my subject. The expertise and
helpfulness of the instructors, moderators and guides is more than money can buy.

I paint pastels in photorealism because I find it very challenging
and it gives other artists an insight into the great versatility of
the pastel medium. It is very rewarding being able to share any knowledge
that I have with others and to see the many different artist's styles of
pastel work and techniques on Wet Canvas is invaluable. It's a great
place to show, look and learn.

Info: It is 430mmW x 660mmH or 17inW x 26inH and it took close to 200hrs.
I used my favourite pastel...Faber Castell and some Rembrants they are
both hard pastels and can be sharpened for fine detail. It was painted
on the rear of Canson pastel paper (The smooth side).

I would like to go under my post name of Gaka...Gaka means artist in Japanese.
