I joined Wet Canvas in January 2003 and was recommended
to join by someone I knew who was already a member. I have
met so many nice people from all over the world in here,
and it is really encouraging to see the work of other
pastel artists in this forum…… some of which is astounding!
There is always help at hand if you need it and I am so
glad that I was recommended to join ….I have never come
across a site for art and artists like Wet Canvas before!

I began using pastels about 4 years ago, after doing oils
for 7 years. Whilst I still like oil I now tend to use
pastels all the time, mainly because of the instant colour
that can be obtained by them…. no more wasting time mixing
up paints (and very often ending up with a colour I don’t
want!). I also find the end result is more pleasing to me
and I can achieve some good effects. Mistakes can be
rectified quite easily by just brushing off what you don’t
want with a brush with stiff bristles i.e., an oil painting
brush.

To anyone who has not tried pastels before, I would
certainly recommend them. Yes they can be a bit messy,
but the end result is worth it !!

Pastels have certainly enabled me to reach levels that I could not attain with
other mediums. I started with soft pastels but soon moved on to oil pastels
and I am every excited and enthusiastic about their endless possibilities.

WetCanvas! has been the single best thing that ever happened to me as
a self-taught artist...until I found WC I used books as my main source of
information but there was no one to tell me if I got it right or wrong. Things
made sense, but just didn't seem to fall in place until I found the Pastel forum.
Everyone here is willing to share what they've learned, and I can honestly
say I've come further in the 6 short months I've been here than I did in the
previous 6 years!

The first time I picked up a set of pastels I had no intention of creating art -- I just
wanted to play with the colorful sticks. I really hadn't any introduction to visual art,
either formal or in play. The set cost about five dollars at the university bookstore.
Now my pastel habit barely leaves me with enough money for bread and water, but I'm happier
for it.

I also paint, but pastels are my first and favorite medium. Soft pastels can mimic oils
in execution and technique, be used as a drawing tool with untouchable vibrancy or a
uniquely velvety softness, and a little water in the dust even lets you brush them with
an effect akin to transparent watercolors. However they are used, the resulting painting
will be more vivid and engaging for having been done in pastels.

Really though, I still just want to play with the colorful sticks, but I find that a
careful sort of play with pastels, coupled with close attention to all the tips found
on WetCanvas, yields incredible results. The Pastel Forum has provided me with expert
critiques, an encyclopedia of techniques, and countless opportunities to view some of the
finest pastel work around. I'd be worse off had I not picked up that first set of colored
sticks, and far worse off if I hadn't discovered WetCanvas -- many thanks to everyone who
has made this place so great.
