"Pastel Showcase 2003"

Author: Sue_Choppers-Wife, Contributing Editor

Welcome to the Pastel Showcase 2003, a combined compilation of paintings from some of our very talented WetCanvas Pastel forum artists!

Pastels are one of the most versatile mediums in the artworld. They can be used in soft, pencil and oil form. Pastels can be easily utilized for quick sketches or for more evolved pastel paintings, which is the accepted teminology for this type of work. They can be combined with mediums or stand alone and are adaptable to many of the techniques used with other traditional art materials.

All of the following contributing WC Pastel forum members have been awarded the Pastel merit badge and are active in supporting this forum on a regular basis.

Pastels are the quintessential media for expressing
anything from a quick sketch to complete painting. The
fact that they are the purest form of art media next to
using pure pigment and the directness of using pastel
are two of it's best attributes. The ability to capture
the most delicate nuances of light and color is it's
"magic."
The WC Pastel Forum has been a great place to
share techniques, ideas, joys of and converse about
pastel with beginners and pros alike. Whether in a
tight-realistic or totally non-objective to soft
application to juicy color, pastel is always a winner!

I discovered pastels after years of struggle with
watercolours, and immediately felt I had been reborn! I
love working with pastels. I enjoy the feeling of direct
contact with the paper, without a brush between me and
my support; I love the softness of a fine chalk pastel,
the way the lightest of touches will breathe colour onto
the paper, and when I am feeling bold and vigorous, how
I can attack the painting with passion, using firm,
positive marks. There is no “drying time” with pastels,
which suits my impatient nature. They are easy to
correct too … another bonus!

With pastels, my work developed in leaps and bounds. My
ability to represent that which interest me most – light
and atmosphere in my work – is growing all the time.
Working with pastels has been, for me, a most liberating
experience, and one I never fail to enjoy.

Discovering WC! Has enriched my life too – thanks to
communication in the Pastels Forum, I have picked up
ideas about techniques and materials that I might never
have discovered elsewhere.

This year, I was awarded the accolade of being made a
signature member of the Pastel Society of America. By
using pastels, I have managed to realise one of my
dreams – that of having my work recognised for its
quality, by my peers.
