"Portrait of Joseph in Oil"

Because I have tried much harder to work on developed paintings, not just likenesses, I worked more on the surroundings, a blue drape covered half the white wall which was a tad greener.

I mixed cerulean in the white wall with a bit of ocher to dull it. On his uniform, I found the blue needed a LOT of purple in the ultramarine to make it rich. The blue was MORE blue with the addition of the analogous color.

I got this picture from a stitched together scan I made when it dried. The digital progress photos show a lot of what it looked like as I painted with my "readers" on and this is how the rest of the world sees it.

I always say I don't paint eyes or lips or faces, I do shapes lights and darks.

This last detail shows how little was done to make such a great difference. The addition of a bit lighter color next to the dark color of the eye defines it perfectly. The nose is carved by lights and darks surrounding it.

I love dotting the highlights on the eye and nose and chin as I finish to give the twinkle of life to the skin.

SO there it is. How I do an oil portrait!

Debra Jones is a recycled artist. After a couple of decades off she is pursuing it again like gangbusters. She recently was exhibited in the Pastel Society of America's PASTEL ONLY! show and has studied with Sally Strand. Now she is undertaking oils again. Again on a scholarship, she attended a workshop with Milt Kobayashi, WetCanvas!'s own Bruin70. A constant contributer and grateful WetCanvas!er, she is trying yet another article. It may be a trend!
