| I was sitting in the chat room late one night, talking with a few friends, when one of them sent a message of dismay. An email had been received from someone's son, telling of his father's sudden illness. The father was Joe Majury, another member of WetCanvas!. | ![]() |
| "Joe and I have been friends since December, but it seems as though we've known each other forever. We've had good laughs, and share our ups and downs, both artistically and personally. We chat almost daily, and on days when we don't have a quick chat, somehow on those days, it seems that something is missing from my day. Joe Majury is the sort of person folks like to be around. He's friendly, helpful and always has a kind word to say or a joke to share. He's the sort of person that doesn't let life and it's disasters get in his way." The recipient of the e-mail relayed the pertinent contents to the community at large in a posting to the Café Guerbois Forum. |
| "He had been complaining the last few days of a really severe headache, but this morning he woke up, and didn't know anyone, or where he was, or who he was. We have had the Doctor out, and the Doctor says that it has been a severe frontal lobe stroke, but going on Dads past, he will recover, but this, so far, has been the worse one. He can't remember anything or anyone, and just sits in the chair. He finds it difficult to eat or speak, and he is frightened because he doesn't know anyone. I think I said last time, how much the Art site meant to my Dad, he lived for it. I know he has a lot of friends there, so if you could please let them know what is happening to him, I would appreciate it. I'm sorry, but this time I don't think he will recover as quick as he did last time. Once before, he lost his memory for 6 months, but I think he is worse this time. I will check his e-mail as often as I can, but at the moment, passing on peoples regards is pointless, he doesn't even know me." | ![]() |
| From that point, the news spread, and responses began to pour in: 33 the first day, 7 more the following day, 9 the next, until 90 messages had been posted in less than three weeks time. I knew Joe only slightly. We had jokingly made comment on more than one occasion that we seemed to pass in fleeting moments, one entering the chat room as the other exited. The only time we had shared more than a few words together had been just days before his illness. I recall thinking at the time, with regret, that I might not have another opportunity. However, I learned much about Joe and even more about the community of WetCanvas! by reading the messages of encouragement posted. Responses came from friends and acquaintances, of all ages, from across the world, even from people who didn't know the man, but knew he must be someone special because so many people cared. Some offered best wishes for a speedy recovery; believers of various faiths offered prayers for Joe and his family. There were poignant messages and others that shared humor, even in the face of adversity, because Joe is a man who enjoys humor (as was seen by his Irish Jokes building towards St. Patrick's Day!). These are excerpts from the many messages posted: |

"I was so deeply saddened to hear this news and though I barely know him, I wondered what we could do to convey our thoughts and good wishes." "…Sure enough Joe arrived on the scene with a hiss and a roar and is one of our leading lights in the forums. I am not a religious man but my thoughts are with Joe at this trying time and I am sure he will fight like hell to get back and return to Painting like a Millionaire. We love you Joe." "Never liked anyone as well, so soon after I met them, Joe. Get back here soon." |
