"Porcelain Flowers"

The art of Cold Porcelain originated in Russia and became popular in the Victorian times throughout the world. The art of flower making was forgotten for a long time, but is now very popular again…it is probably also more successful due to the advancement of the basic ingredients.

I have listed the most typical ingredients needed to make Porcelain Flowers (known as Porcelana). This list is variable and this type of work can be made with bread crumbs and other starch materials or even salt dough… although you will not get the same fine translucent effect. Also the flowers will not be as strong.

Ingredients for the porcelain

1 cup of Cornstarch
1 cup of Wood glue
1/4 cup of water
1 teaspoon Glycerine
few drops of Formol or if you can’t get this use Hydrogen Peroxide.
Hand Cream
Old saucepan…preferably non-stick
Fork or spoon

Other items

Oil paint in required shades and thinner
Paint brushes
Wire in a variety of thicknesses
Florists’ Tape in brown and green
Wire cutters

Useful Tools

I have included a picture of the tools and other items which are useful in making flowers. Moulds, cutters and even a little press for flattening the mixture into a thin sheet are available for purchase but are not always essential tools. I have some of these but find that I seldom use them.

Essential Tools

Rolling pin
Thick plastic sheet - like the one's used in a folder
Small pointed stick or cable knitting needle
Scissors
Knife…plastic if possible
Pot filled with polystyrene to use as holder
Small jar filled with the wood glue

Cut the wire to the length needed for each flower, choosing a suitable thickness. For example you will only need the finest wire for small flowers and leaves.
Cut some of the florists tape into 12 inch lengths and then cut into half lengthwise. You will have two strips, each 12 inches long.

Start at one end of the wire and attach the tape…you will soon get into the swing of rotating the wire in one hand and holding the tape between thumb and forefinger on the other hand . With practice, this gets easier and soon you'll find yourself enjoying it! Make sure you cover enough wire for the project before you start making the flowers. For example, if your goal is to make four flowers and 4 leaves, have 8 lengths of wire handy.
