Next we will use a wax candle as a paint resist aid.

Before you do the splatter further up the paper, rest two pencils on either side of your paper and place a board on top to prevent the paint from falling on the sea area. When we paint the sea we want to preserve some white parts of the paper for the white caps in the surf. Using a candle, rub thin streaks of wax along the surf area. This will prevent the paint settling on these lines. If no candle is available then frisket could be applied instead.

We need a nice straight level line for the horizon when we paint in the sea. First prepare a mix of french ultramarine with a touch of light red to dull slightly. We next need to wet the paper from the horizon line down to the sand area. I laid a plastic ruler along the line pressing the edge down on the paper as I applied the clear water using my mop brush. Remove ruler and continue wetting the paper down across part of the beach. Now while it is still wet drop in the blue mix onto the wet area just below the horizon line. The paint will only disperse to the wet areas, as you get down to the beach area, just apply random patches of blue so it will allow the sand to show. Now tilt the board back so that the paint runs back to the horizon line. Hold in this position for a while until the paper starts to dry slightly then tilt board back so that the mix seeps back down, lay flat and leave top dry completely. This will give a darker line of paint along the horizon.
