We now need some masking fluid. (also known as frisket)

I use an old brush with most of the bristles cut off so that fine lines can be painted using the frisket fluid.

First I apply washing up fluid (soap)to the bristles, this will prevent the fluid permanently sticking to the brush which would ruin it. Check out the article on Using Masking Fluid for more information.
The above left image shows our progress.

As the image on the right shows, paint carefully around the tree and the top edge of the railing with masking fluid (frisket) to protect the white surface of the paper.
Never apply masking fluid to damp paper. Ensure all surfaces are thoroughly dry before applying.

As shown, frisket was applied along the top edge of fence line and tree trunk.
Mix up a dark brown using Burnt Umber with French Ultramarine and Alizarin Crimson.

Paint in the trees along the river bank.
