| The Subject: In my back yard, I set up a still life using orange and white roses in a pink vase on a small table covered with a pink table cloth. I add in two nectarines. The light source was morning sun. The secondary light source was the cool sky light. I chose an 12 x 16 inch gessoed board. |
Composition: Essentially working with the layout and design, I use lines to indicate the tops, bottoms, and sides of roses as a group, the vase, the nectarines, and the cast shadows. Then I indicate individual rose placement, nectarines shapes, and the table horizon line. I'm not concerned with the detail, that will come later. |

| Dark and Light Pattern: Squinting, to get the overall light patterns, I establish the large simple masses with thin paint. |
