Landscape Demonstration

This first painting in this series does not have step by step photos, but all the rest of them do. I started with Winsor & Newton 140 lb. cold-pressed paper cut to 7.5" x 11". The colours used in this painting are Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Rose, and Hooker's Green Dark. All are Da Vinci artist quality paints.

Step 1: Tape paper to board and wet the top two-thirds of the paper. Apply a quick graduated wash of Ultramarine Blue, then Permanent Rose, applied with a 3" hake brush. A combination of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna for the rock shapes, then quickly (while it is still wet) scrape out with a pallette knife to form the rock shapes. The same two colours are added on top of the rocks for background tree shapes. Slightly dry with hairdryer, then add more detailed trees with a 1" angle brush. A bit of Hooker's Green Dark was added to the rock colours for the more detailed trees. Dry thoroughly.

Step 2: The water is done the same as the sky, except upside down. So, wet the bottom one-third of the paper, add Perm Rose then Ultra Blue, reflections for the trees and rocks (using same colours from rocks and trees in Step 1).

Step 3: The finish. Mix Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and a touch of Hooker's Green Dark, using less water than the first mix, and add the darkest trees closest to the center of interest. A few lines were added to the water with a liner brush to show small ripples. With your razor knife, scrape a few highlights out on the water and along the shoreline and a few highlights scraped into the trees....again, close to the center of interest.

Enjoy the painting.....remember, its only a piece of paper.
Lighthouse Demonstration

Step 1: This is a wet-on-wet painting, so do not tape the paper down. I used 140 lb. Bockingford Cold-Pressed paper cut to 15" x 22". Start with a simple line drawing of the lighthouse, buildings and rocks. (The paper is actually white, but the photo doesn't show it that way....I'm an artist, not a photographer!)
Step 2: Start by wetting the paper on both sides and continue to wet it front and back for about 3 minutes. Add Cerulean Blue to the sky, then, to add the dark clouds, immediately add a mix of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna while holding the board on an angle to allow the paint to run horizontally across the sky. Use a clean, folded paper towel to remove the paint from the light house and the other buildings. While it is still wet, start adding the trees that are a mixture of Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and Hooker's Green Dark. Add the rocks with a mixture of Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue. Add Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna in the water.

At this point, everything should still be wet, so it is time to scrape the front of the rocks, the stairs, the power poles and the power pole lines. Now it is time to take a deep breath and dry the painting. This will take quite a while as you need to dry front and back. When it starts to curl, turn it over and dry the other side.....continue this back and forth drying until it lies flat.
Step 3: At this point, you do more work in the water, using the same colors (Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna), but with a touch of Hooker's Green Dark. Add some fine lines with a liner brush. The waves are done with a one-inch angle brush. Add the light blue mountains in the background using Cerulean Blue. Start working on the rocks where they hit the water to anchor the rocks into the water and keep them from looking like they are floating. Dry the painting again.
Step 4: The finish..... The final steps are the shading of the lighthouse and the buildings. I used Ultramarine Blue and Permanent Rose. Add the lines in the rocks, buildings and lighthouse with a script (liner) brush, using a combination of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna. Add the red roofs using Alizarin Crimson. Add a touch of Indian Yellow to the light in the lighthouse. Dry it and you are ready for the mat.
