| If I were to step into your studio, what kind of music would I hear?
Music runs a wide range from things like James Brown, older southern rock bands, or the Spin Doctors for times requiring wild 'n' crazy upbeat motivation. Miles Davis, other 50s-60s, and some new jazz, Hendrix, or Pink Floyd for those cerebral days. The only music that I can not tolerate is opera. I hope my muse is not an old Italian glassworker; he'll definitely cut me off for saying that. |

| Tell me Dave, is your music filled studio clean enough to eat in, or is it an absolute mess?
I clean up, neaten up, and put everything in it's place before each session, and then gradually descend into such total chaos that I am looking around for tools I always use every two minutes. Entropy rules! No escaping whatever law of thermodynamics that claims everything is gradually winding down into nothingness. |
| When you sit down at the torch, do you have a vision in mind, or do you just go with the flow of the glass?
I ensure a part of each glass session is strictly play, where anything goes in terms of how I choose the glass, combine the colors, and manipulate the glass. Usually, somewhere in this play process one of the little mental drawers opens up and suggests a direction. Sometimes a lot of the drawers get open all at once and we have a really wild day. |
| How do you feel about teaching others the skills that you have taught yourself?
I dearly love to teach, helping others get up to speed on glass or whatever. I will always remember how it was when no one would help me or tell me anything when I was new. The teaching experience always seems to have me gaining new insights and fresh ideas from those I teach. I am often not able to see the trees for the forest because I have been in the forest too long. |
