Finally...here I am teaching a basic painting workshop. The day before, I taught basic concepts in composition and colorwheel theory which could be used in realism or abstract modes of working. Here on this day, I did a quick demonstration of my working routine.

I set up an 11" by a 14" photo of a waterfalls from Wisconsin...and announcing we were going to pretend to be along side the stream, it was my intention to paint very quickly so as not to lose the existing possible light. Here you see me (as I often share here on Wetcanvas), with my latex gloves on and a rag wrapped around my finger, dipping the finger in turps and paint to block in the masses.
[ Editor's Note: There is another lesson to be learned here for beginners. Take a look at Larry's eyes - he is squinting them to get a more holistic look at his sketch. This is a skill which should be honed just as much as your brushwork and color mixing. A quote from Larry on this subject: "I just looked over the images I sent you for Cornerstone, and noticed in my "rag in" picture, you can see my eyes are squinted! Proof I do this! The kids at first think I draw and paint with my eyes closed until I explain..." ] |
