Watercolor Painting, My Way: Historic Kaiapoi Railway Station: L1
Author: Rod Webb, Associate Editor

I painted the Historic Railway Station at Kaiapoi, New Zealand some time ago. I used some artistic license with the position of the sun. I wanted it to shine up the tracks and under the platform arch. The tracks actually lead due south. At the time I took a series of photos using my old Kodak camera. Here are the stages of development of the watercolor painting.

After transferring the sketch to my stretched watercolor paper I applied masking fluid to the sun, pole ,chimney and tracks.
This will make first sky washes easier to apply. |

Sky area and some foreground by the tracks wetted with clear water.
First light wash of yellow applied around sun and beside roof line using wet into wet techniques. While the paper is still wet apply Alizarin crimson then allow to dry thoroughly, preferrably overnight.

Re-wet the paper and apply a stronger mix of Alizarin
Crimson to selected areas in the sky. Then allow to dry.
