Watercolor Painting, My Way!: Shagrock, Sumner: L1

Author: Rod Webb, Associate Editor

Here is a photograph of Shagrock at Sumner, New Zealand. Today, we'll paint it!

This lesson is eight (8) pages in length.

A line drawing image is available for download if you wish to follow along with my painting.

Drawing was transferred to Saunders fine 300gms watercolor paper stretched before use.

Size:  26cms by 37cms.

First, I applied a Raw Sienna wash to the sky area, painting around the rock.

While wet, I painted streaks of an Ultramarine/Alizarin Crimson mix across the lower sky area.

Then, I started streaks at the top using Cobalt Blue/Light Red.

The paper had started to dry so I had to stop. :-)

After the paper had thoroughly dried, I re-wet the sky area with clear water and added some more streaks of Cobalt Blue/Light Red.

The distant hills were painted with a mix of Cobalt Blue/Burnt Umber, a blue grey while the sky area was still wet, which resulted in a soft edge at the top.

After the paper had dried, sand dunes were painted with a mix of Cobalt Blue and Cadmium Yellow. Burnt umber was dropped into the base of dunes (while wet). The sand area was painted with Raw Sienna.
