Time to set up your palette! The colors used are:
Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, French Ultramarine, Light Red, Alizarin Crimson, Paynes Grey, Sap Green. Use an old brush to apply masking fluid. See the lesson on masking fluid techniques for more details!

The masking fluid is applied to base sepals and stem. This will make the background wash easier to apply. |

We need to produce an oval vignette art background:
The background wash is faded out towards the edge of the paper by diluting the wash, producing an oval shape surrounded by white paper. A band of clear water is brushed on as shown by the band of black. |

A large soft brush is used to wet the paper around the oval edge. |

Mix a grey wash using Burnt Umber, French Ultramarine and Light Red.
Carefully paint around the petals, extending the background wash out to the dampened band of paper. When the wash meets the dampened paper, the paint will be diluted and a soft faded edge will be produced. |
