Step 5

Read through this page to familiarize yourself with the steps.

BRUSHES: #3 Small Round Brush ,#14 Large Round and 1/2 " Flat brushes Wet and blot both just before using.

COLORS: Gamboge Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Violet and Ultramarine Blue.

OBJECTIVE: To paint the dark center of the flower and a few dark accents around the petals

LET'S BEGIN: Mix individual puddles of Burnt Sienna, Violet, Gamboge Yellow and Ultramarine Blue. The GY and UB can be smaller than the other two as we only need a little of each. Look closely at the Step 5 photo below. Notice that I have marked various areas A-E. Notice how the center has a layer of Burnt Sienna (A) and then a darker deeper area within that (B). In and around C,D and E small dark accents.

  • With your large round brush pick up a rich mixture of Burnt Sienna and paint a circular shape at the center of the flower. Using your 1/2" flat brush which should be clean and lightly blotted, soften the RIGHT EDGE of the burnt sienna by running the brush along the edge, allowing the paint to flow softly into the flower. DO NOT touch the left edge of burnt sienna center as we want a nice crisp edge at this point wher the stamen disappears. Allow this area to DRY COMPLETELY before proceeding.

CLEAN AND BLOT BRUSHES

  • Pick up a small round brush (#2 or 3) and dip it into some GY on the palette and then some Violet. Go to C and notice the two small dark accents in the fold of the flower just above C and to its right. Paint these small lines to show a darker highlight and to give depth to the painting. These accents should be a little darker in value than the surrounding shadow area. Move to area D and paint the two small dark accents with GY and Violet. Just to the left of area E another dark accent for the center of the upper petal.

CLEAN ALL BRUSHES AND BLOT

  • Now we will paint the darkest part of the flower. Mix some Burnt Sienna and add some violet and a little Ultramarine Blue to darken the Burnt Sienna. Be sure the area of Burnt Sienna you painted earlier is completely dry first. With a small round brush paint this BS+V+UB mixture in a small circular fashion at B, the center of the painting. Keep it smaller in diameter than area A.

Let the painting dry. Move on to the final Step 6.
