Read through this page to familiarize yourself with the steps.
BRUSHES: #14 Large Round and 1/2 " Flat brushes Wet and blot both just before using.
COLORS: Gamboge Yellow, Violet and Ultramarine Blue.
OBJECTIVE: To paint the deep shadow areas of the flower. Take a look at the Step 4 photo below and then the Step 3 photo to see the changes in this step. Click your BACK on your browser after looking at Step 3 photo. In this Step 4 photo I have labeled parts of the painting with letters A-L. This is to help show the progression of this part of the painting .
LET'S BEGIN: Mix seperate puddles of Gamboge Yellow, Violet and Ultramarine Blue on your palette.
- We will begin our work in the center of the flower. Have your paper flat (horizontal) for this part. Look at the photo below, paying close attention to the areas marked A -H. Once you start painting "A" don't stop til you complete "H". Okay, ready?
- With your large round brush pickup Gamboge Yellow from your palette. Make sure you have plenty of paint in the brush and in the center of the flower where the stamen emerges A, brush GY(See photo) around the center. Pick up your 1/2" brush and soften the edges to the right of center. Using the large round again (with out cleaning it) and quickly pick up a littleViolet paint on the palette. At the top petal B lay in some of the Violet/Gamboge Yellow and pull it into the center of the flower til it touches/mixes with the GY you just put in. Pay attention to the shape of B. If too much violet flows into the center of A just dab it with a tissue as we want the very center to stay Yellow. Move to the top of C and pull the paint in towards the center until it touches and blends with the existing yellow. Quickly clean and blot your brush.
- Now pick up more GY and again touch into your Violet and go right to the outer edge at D and pull paint into the center as before and define the large that lies above A in the process. Back out to the edge and pull paint in from E and the area between D & E. Try to leave some small breaks between D & E to show light on the folds. Quickly clean and blot your brush. Load it more GY and then a little Violet. Go to the bottom petal F and pull paint towards the center of the flower til it connects with A. From the area marked F pull some paint to the left into G and around M and defining the thin shadow area running thru the left petal. Lastly, go to the right side of A and pull a little paint OUTWARD at H to show some of the veins and folds. Quickly clean your brush and be sure to blot. Nice going!
- We will paint areas I thru L now. These are shadow areas of folds in the petals. Take a little (just a smidge) Ultramarine Blue and add it to your Violet. Do not add too much here otherwise you will get green when we add our GY. We are just looking to vary the color a little. With your large round brush pick up some GY and touch it into your violet/blue mix and starting at I, pull the paint in towards the center. (Note that all these folds do not go completely to the center). Vary the lengths here.(refer to photo for each). As you paint each one (I - L) pick up your clean and blotted 1/2 " brush and soften the top or right edge of these shadows as you go. You can go to the area marked N and do the same here. Clean your brush and be sure to blot.
- The final step is to add a little tone to area M. Take your clean large round and "paint" just clean water in the area marked M. Make sure the surrounding areas that you painted before are dry before doing this ,so as not to introduce water into those areas. Pick up a little GY and Violet/Blue on the tip of your brush and drop just a little into this area and let it flow softly. CLEAN BRUSH/BLOT Pick up a tiny bit of the pure GY and touch it into the right edge of M so it appears the adjacent yellow from A is reflecting on this area. CLEAN ALL BRUSHES.
Let the painting dry.(10 minutes). Move on to Step 5.
