Step 3

Step 3

Read through this page to familiarize yourself with the steps.

BRUSHES: #14 Large Round and 1" Flat brushes Wet and blot both just before using.

COLORS: Burnt Sienna , Sap Green, Ultamarine Blue, Thalo(Winsor) Blue and Violet.

OBJECTIVE: To darken and semi-neutralize some areas of the background. Look at the Step 3 photo (below) and compare to see the differences from step 2.

LET'S BEGIN:

Use whatever brush you feel comfortable with and mix the following large puddles of paint on your palette: Sap Green, Sap Green and Ultra Blue(a blue green), Sap Green with a touch of Thalo Blue(a strong dark blue green). Also mix smaller seperate puddles of Burnt Sienna and Violet(DO NOT mix!). We will add them to some of the other colors. Be sure you have good rich mixtures of paint, not too watery and weak.

CLEAN YOUR BRUSH.

  • With your 1" brush, pre-wet the UR background area, much like you did in Step 1 then scoop up some of the SG+UB mixture with your large round brush. Drop some onto the damp paper on some of the existing green areas. Place the paint randomly around the outsides of this area then CLEAN YOUR BRUSH and pick up some of the SG+TB mixture and drop some onto the background next to areas you just painted. The SG+TB will flow quite freely on damp paper so monitor its flow and have a tissue ready to dab if it flows into unwanted areas. Brush this mixture up against the edge of the flower to give a darker edge to the background. Try to maintain some of the soft yellow areas from the previous step to suggest a distant flower. DO NOT paint over all the Step 1 areas.
  • Finally, pick up a small amount of Sap Green and Burnt Sienna. Drop a litle of the Green-Brown mix into your back ground. CLEAN BRUSH and pick up some SG and Violet and put this into the background. This Green-Violet combo will darken and grey down some of the background areas. Step back and look at what you have. The UR should be a little darker than the remaining 3 areas. Looking at the Step 3 photo you will see a couple stem like areas near the top UR. To paint these "negative" shapes, let the areas dry completely then with your round brush and some SG+TB paint on both sides of the "stem" creating a negative shape. Look at the example of how I created the negative shape below. In the picture on the right I just painted a dark over the dry area creating a negative shape.

CLEAN ALL BRUSHES

  • Move to the upper left and proceed as in the UR. by pre-wetting most (but not all) of the area. Start with your SG+UB combo then the SG+TB mixtures. Paint those areas between the stems(Do not pre wet) with a strong SG+UB combo and even touch a little SG+TB into those areas to make them dark. Add some SG+BS and SG+V after the other mixtures. Try to maintain some of the lighter areas from Step 1. Do not paint over the whole area.

CLEAN ALL BRUSHES

  • Paint the LL in the same manner as the previous 2 areas. First pre-wet then drop some color over some of the existing color. Paint the area between the stems with a dark SG+TB mixture right on the dry paper.

CLEAN ALL BRUSHES

  • By now you probably have a good idea what to do with the LR so I'll let you do this one yourself. :-) You're probably thinking, "Gee, thanks George!". At this point, all I need to add is this: Try to maintain the stem we "lifted" in Step 1 by NOT wetting it and painting your darks around the stem further defining it. Good luck! You can do it!

CLEAN ALL BRUSHES

Let the painting dry.(10 minutes). Move on to Step 4.
