Hollowing a Clay Sculpture: Page 5

By: Frank Moran

Step 13/15:

Spray the sculpture with water, wrap in the plastic bag it's sitting on and leave it alone for a day.

Step 14/15:

Set a sandbag on your sculpture stand like this and cover with a plastic bag. This will make a good platform that will mold to the shape of the bottom of your sculpture and will give as the sculpture dries and shrinks when you are finished.

Step 15/15:

This is the sculpture on the sandbag ready to be finished. Spray water as needed, but not too much, and cover with a plastic bag when your not working on it. I dry my sculptures slowly for 2 weeks leaving the plastic bag off for progressively longer periods of time, then I leave it uncovered at least another week before I fire it.

About Frank Moran:

I live in western Oklahoma and am a member of the Oklahoma Sculpture Society with whom I exhibit and participate in workshops. I've been sculpting since 1993 and my sculpture interests are portraits and figures. My sculptures are in corporate and private collections and I have exhibited in local and national juried competitions. I use water base clay, fire it and patina with wax, stain or paint. I'm available to do portrait busts and reliefs
from photographs or from live modeling if you live close enough.
