Pastel Still Life Demo: L1/6

Author: Rod Webb, Associate Editor

I use Canson Pastel paper, as it has a different "tooth" or texture on each side.

As shown, the side on the left has a finer grain, with a random sort of pattern. The rough side has a regular coarse pattern.

I prefer to use the smoother side.

For this painting, I will mainly be using the "rubbing method".

After the pastel colours have been applied, the surface is rubbed with either your finger or, for smaller spots, a paper stick.

This smooths and works the pastel into the tooth of the paper.

I use strips of thick cardboard cut from the backs of sketching pads.
