Cartooning with Jason Seiler (2/5)
Author: Larry Seiler, Associate Editor
As you noticed surrounding Jason in the previous photo, his walls are filled with comics and works. He emphasized what he felt was the necessity to surround himself with the best works of others to fuel and drive his own efforts. I have to tell you, it blesses me to no end to see how Jason has developed his ability to sketch, as this was one thing I tried as an artist/father very hard to get him to learn while yet in high school...and if he were honest, he'd admit he made my life difficult....pulling hair, whining! Ugh! But...this determined young man has really developed a professional knack of it, and he admits how important it is to all his work.
Jason cites Mort Drucker of "Mad Magazine", Al Hirschfeld, and Jim Borgman of "Zits" as those he considers influences for his work.
Jason chose to create his character Gaven, and holding a roll of toilet paper for us...(of all things). He begins with a 5mm pencil of HB lead, and loosely gestures out an idea.
Satisfied with its progress, Jason next strengthens the lines he intends to ink. The remaining lines will be erased later after the inking process thereby cleaning up the work.
