Digital Painting for the Beginner: L7

Digital Portraiture: Page 4

I know that you are thinking that it would be helpful if you knew where we were headed with this thing so here I have posted my preliminary color study.

We hope to improve on this in our final painting but this may help you to know the direction we intend to go. This will give you a point of reference to go to when the "goin gets tough". :-)

I begin by locating the darkest areas on ONE SIDE of the face. Now, I can tell you that many other portrait artists will tell you that working one side of the face at a time is not good practice. It IS, however the way I find most useful for me and I have done so for many years.

I can give you the RGB values for this dark, which is  R 189, G 118, B 81, but I doubt that it will be of much value to you except as a starting point. We will be "dragging" many values together and this will almost surely end up being some value in between them all! In a photo or working from a live model you would be constantly searching for these darks. Just paint them in with your paintbrush tool. All we are doing here is blocking in color.
